For lunch today I decided to visit a local coffee shop and sit down to re-read
Blue Like Jazz-one of my favorite books-while enjoying a nice hot chocolate. It was rather quiet as an older man opened the door and yelled inside a friendly "Hello" to the owner at the back of the shop. The man was handicapped in some form or another and you could hear it in his speech, and I thought to myself this is probably a highlight of his day:walking through town and stopping to say hello to one of his friends. A few minutes later the man walks back to the door and yells back in "You're my friend Sam [the owner]" with so much excitement in his voice I thought he would run in and hug her right then. She yelled back "you're my friend too!" with equal excitement, and he seemed content to close the door back and proceed on his walk.
It's nice to have friends isn't it?
While it may not seem like much, it is being able to witness simple moments-just like this one-that make my heart smile everyday. I believe, if you are willing and open to them, that you will begin to see these small simple moments in your everyday life as well.
